Lowestoft Maritime Museum

Lowestoft Maritime Museum

Lowestoft Maritime Museum is located in Sparrows Nest Gardens, close to Lowestoft Lighthouse. The museum houses various lighthouse and lightvessel artefacts and displays.

In 1958, the Lowestoft and East Suffolk Maritime Society was formed to preserve the town’s maritime legacy. As their collection increased, a permanent base was needed. So, in 1968, the Society was granted a lease of the cottage in Sparrow’s Nest Park for this purpose. The cottage was restored in 1828, and rooms were developed to feature different aspects of maritime history.

By 1978, a new extension had been built to accommodate the increasing number of items, and a further extension was started in 2008. Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal reopened the new extension in 2010.

Given Lowestoft’s prominence as a coastal town, the museum has several displays dedicated to maritime navigation. Visitors can learn about the lighthouses and lightvessels that have guided ships along the coast for centuries.

During the First and Second World Wars, Sparrows Nest Park was the headquarters for the Fishermen’s Navy, the Royal Naval Patrol Service. The museum has an exhibition about this.

Lowestoft was once one of the busiest fishing ports in the UK. The museum, therefore, has a comprehensive collection dedicated to the town’s fishing heritage. It also focuses on the herring industry, which was once the lifeblood of Lowestoft’s economy.

The town has a long shipbuilding history, and the museum offers insights into this once-thriving industry. Visitors can see models of ships built in Lowestoft’s shipyards, along with tools and equipment used by shipwrights.

Lowestoft has a proud history of lifeboat service, with its crews saving countless lives over the years. The museum has displays about the local Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). There are models of lifeboats, historical photographs, and stories of rescues.

The museum also houses a collection of maritime-themed art and photography, much of which is by local artists and photographers.

The museum’s volunteers also provide tours and share their knowledge about the exhibits and the town’s history.

Lowestoft Maritime Museum is located in Sparrow’s Nest Park, which has gardens, walking paths, and a café. Above the park stands Lowestoft Lighthouse.
