Great Yarmouth Depot

Great Yarmouth Depot

The former Trinity House depot in Great Yarmouth, located at Trinity Quay, Southgates Road, was established in 1791.

To minimize lengthy sea voyages to and from Blackwall, Trinity House set up six district depots. These were located in Harwich, Great Yarmouth, East Cowes, Penzance, Holyhead, and Swansea. These depots played an important role in maintaining and supplying lighthouses, lightvessels, and buoys.

The Great Yarmouth depot was responsible for the maintenance of lighthouses, lightvessels and buoys along the east coast of England. It covered the stretch between Southwold in Suffolk and up to the Scottish borders.

With the automation of lightvessels, many being replaced by buoys, there was no longer a need for a local depot. The Great Yarmouth depot closed in May 2003 in a ceremony attended by the Deputy Master of Trinity House, Rear Admiral Jeremy de Halpert CB. Following its closure the buildings were sold privately.

Today, only the Trinity House depots in Harwich and Swansea remain.

Whilst the buildings at Trinity Quay are now privately owned, they are still distinctive, and the Trinity House crest is still visible on the building.
