St Helen’s Fort is one of the former Solent forts owned by the National Trust. It was used as a navigation aid in more recent times.
Ethel Langton, one of the lighthouse keepers’ daughters, aged 15, was stranded for three days and nights when her parents had rowed ashore for provisions and could not return due to bad weather. She was awarded the Lloyds Bronze Medal for Meritorious Services.
An unofficial walk takes place to the fort each year.
