Girvan Harbour Lighthouse is at the end of Girvan’s South Pier. Its concrete tower was built in 1883.  Girvan is located on Scotland’s eastern coast, looking out across the Firth of Clyde. The harbour includes a smaller stone breakwater extending from the northern entrance and a minor light at the end of it.

The harbour dates back to the early 18th century and was originally built to support a thriving local fishing industry along the Ayrshire coast. While fishing continues today, the harbour also accommodates pleasure boats.

The Maybole and Girvan Railway was established in the late 1850s, transforming Girvan into a popular seaside resort, spurring further development and drawing more visitors.

The Water of Girvan originates from Loch Girvan Eye in the Carrick Forest area of Galloway Forest Park. Flowing and winding it stretches for 28 miles before reaching its final destination at the Firth of Clyde in Girvan Harbour.

Girvan harbour and Ailsa Craig

From the shoreline are spectacular views of Ailsa Craig, a volcanic island known as “Paddy’s Milestone. ” This island is famed for its bird colonies and granite quarries, which are used to create the world’s finest curling stones. Ailsa Craig Lighthouse can be seen on the shoreline. Boat tours operate from Girvan Harbour around the island.

From the harbour are also views across to Arran, and northward towards Turnberry Lighthouse, which is just five miles away.

Harbour at Girvan

In April 2022, Girvan Harbour Lighthouse was transformed with illuminated artwork as part of an exhibition commissioned by Hendrick’s Gin.

The lighthouse and breakwater are easily accessible, and a car park is adjacent.

Girvan Shore Station

Girvan Shore Station, located on Trouweir Road, was once home to the families of Ailsa Craig Lighthouse keepers.  The distinctive accommodation was used from the 1950s until 1990, when Ailsa Craig was automated.
